Homer Hickam is a teenage boy in the forties who wants to be a football star and lives in Coalwood Virginia. Most of the workers in Coalwood work for the local mining company His father is a coal miner, and his older brother, Jim, is a skilled player and hopes that Homer will follow in his footsteps. Homer is not good enough to make the football team, let alone earn a scholarship.
